The CRTC fines three telemarketers

OTTAWA-GATINEAU —The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) today found that three telemarketers have violated the National Do Not Call List (DNCL) Rules. The CRTC has issued a $4,000 fine to Rob Sugar, a $10,000 fine to Roofing by Peerless Mason Ltd. and an additional $10,000 fine to Waterproofing by Peerless Mason Inc.

The telemarketers were given opportunities to come into compliance with the National DNCL Rules, but failed to change their business practices. In July, they were each issued with Notices of Violation and given 30 days to either pay the fine or to contest it before a CRTC panel. In light of the evidence before it, the panel found that these telemarketers violated the National DNCL Rules and imposed administrative monetary penalties.

The telemarketers now have 30 days to pay their fines. After 30 days, if the fine is not paid, interest will begin accruing and the CRTC will register the debt with the Federal Court in order to collect the amounts owing. All money collected will be deposited to the Government of Canada’s Consolidated Revenue Fund. About the National DNCL

The National DNCL is a free service for consumers that allows them to reduce the number of unwanted telemarketing calls and faxes they receive. To date, over 7 million numbers have been registered on the National DNCL.

Numbers can be registered at any time by visiting the National DNCL website or by telephone at 1-866-580-DNCL (3625). Consumers requiring the assistance of a teletypewriter can sign up by dialing 1-888-DNCL-TTY (1-888-362-5889).

CRTC issues first Notices of Violation against telemarketers

OTTAWA-GATINEAU —The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) has issued the first Notices of Violation against two telemarketers who have broken the National Do Not Call List (DNCL) Rules.

“Canadians who have registered on the National DNCL have noticed a reduction in the number of telemarketing calls and faxes they receive,” said Leonard Katz, the CRTC’s Vice-Chairman of Telecommunications. “Although most telemarketers are abiding by the rules, we will use the enforcement tools at our disposal to promote compliance. The Notices of Violation we have issued serve as a warning to telemarketers that we will not look the other way if they break the rules and invade the privacy of consumers.”

Telemarketers who have been served with a Notice of Violation have 30 days to either pay the fine or contest it before a CRTC panel. As a general policy, the CRTC will not release the names of violators if the fine is paid without being contested.
